Multinationals in Portugal pay salaries 61% higher than other companies with productivity 57% greater

Productivity and average wages are higher in multinationals operating in Portugal compared to other companies.

This is the conclusion from a study published by the Bank of Portugal, which also reveals differences in these indicators between foreign and Portuguese multinationals in some of the main economic sectors.

A study published in the Bank of Portugal’s Economic Studies Journal (BdP), based on data from 2014 to 2022, concludes that multinationals, on average, pay almost 61% higher average wages, are about 57% more productive in labour productivity, and 65% higher in terms of revenue per worker.

Ana Cristina Soares and Tiago Serrano, authors of the study, also point out that the average wage bonuses from multinationals tends to be “more pronounced” in the main sectors of services, retail and wholesale trade and construction, reaching values above 65%.

In the case of the manufacturing industry and utilities and transport, the percentage drops down to 42%, suggesting that employees in these sectors benefit less from the presence of multinationals.

Productivity bonuses associated with multinationals is between 35 and 73% and tends to be higher in construction, while in manufacturing it is one of the lowest.
